The fact that we got tickets to Skellig Island was pretty much a miracle actually. We found out maybe three days before that there was an opening for two on one of the days that we would be in the area. When we finally found out it wasn’t the easiest decision because we had already spent a good amount of money on our broadway tickets and some other things we planned. When I told Lyle he was like you have to go, this could be your only chance, so then we jumped on it. Last time I was in Ireland was with Lyle and it was late October and the tours go from April until October.  You won’t be able to go out to Skellig any other time unfortunately because of the weather. The locals kept telling us good luck when we would tell them we didn’t have tickets yet because they were booked out of a year in advance. With the eco tour you take a boat out and just circle the island which is still really cool but it is a pretty long boat ride out to the island so being able to get off the boat and walk around the beautiful island is necessary. Haven’t booked your Skellig trip yet and you leave soon, well don’t worry just yet. First, search around. I emailed tons of different boating tours asking them to put me on the cancellation list. We got notified that there were two different places we could have gone on. The thing is, people book these so far in advance that things happen and I think there are a lot of last minute openings. If these still don’t work out for you, you can go wait down on the dock when all the tours leave and at the end they offer up tickets to those waiting around if there is space. It’s cash only and I recommend being there early since it is such a little town and the chances of you getting lost on the way there are high. It is 100% worth it…even if you aren’t a Star Wars fan. It was nesting season and the puffins were everywhere. They are probably the cutest bird I have ever seen and covered the entire place. There are tons of stairs but it is worth it for the beautiful views. Pack a lunch for the top because it is a long excursion and you will be hungry and near the end I was hangry for sure haha. There isn’t much to do on the island itself but see where the monks lived at the top and there is a guide that explains some of the structures up there but it’s such a beautiful place.
