Cookie Crawl Date Idea: Best NYC Chocolate Chip Cookie

This was just a fun date idea that Lyle and I decided to do one day. It is no surprise that we love food and that is probably our main common interest haha. I was just sitting there thinking it would be fun to figure out where the best ice-cream or best cookie place is and we decided to figure it out. I searched some of the main cookie places and not all of them even made the picture and we probably forgot some cookie places but these are the ones we decided to try. I made a google sheet and Lyle laughed at my comments section but it actually turned out really fun. We barely made it through the day and by the the end we had a whole bag of cookies with some bites out of them haha. I think this would be such a fun date night to plan for your significant other or even a girls night. You could do any type of food or drink and make a whole night of it. I think we want to do ice-cream or cupcakes next! We started off with a score 1-10 but that got really hard to decipher after several cookies.

COOKIE CRAWL 2017

So Lyle and I previously would disagree on who we thought had the best chocolate chip cookie. When you ask anyone they will usually respond with Levain. Probably everyone actually. You’ve seen the typical pictures of their cookies, broken in half, gooey and monstrous (see below). They are good. Really good, but they aren’t our favorite.

I know you’re probably looking at this picture thinking how in the world can this not be the best cookie on earth?! but I’ll explain below.

SCHMACKERYS- $2.75

Classic caramel and sea salt spiced up this chocolate chip cookie but it was just good. I was far too distracted by the other cookies they had on display which kind of overshadowed the chocolate chip. It was thick but a little too salty. This place does fun and unique cookies every day and while the chocolate chip cookie isn’t the best in town, this place is a good place to take the family so everyone can get what they want. They have a lucky charms one I am dying to try. You can check out their other flavors online.

WILLIAM GREENBERG- $3.50

“I think they’ve gotten worse as we go on.” Ouch. This place is known for their black and white cookie to be fair but nothing in the whole bakery particularly grabbed my attention and that is saying something. The black and white was just good honestly. They had several color variations of the signature cookie but I have been dying to try Glaser’s who apparently has the all time best (we went there but they are closed for like 2 months so the family can go on vacation!) This was hard and semi sweet (Lyle does not like semi sweet chocolate chips!). We did like that it was dipped in chocolate and had mini chips. It was more crunchy than chewy for our liking though.

JACQUES TORRES “Famous Chocolate Chip Cookie” -$3.00

I read on an Instagram post that this was someone’s favorite cookie in NYC…..I don’t think so. Inside is straight chocolate which is a unique twist. Lyle described it as “a slab of chocolate covered in chocolate chip cookie dough.” It’s not kept warm, it’s thin and I thought it was really hard. Not a gooey or homemade texture. It’s still good but different than your average cookie.

SWEET CORNER BAKESHOP – $whoops

First off, these are chocolate chip cookie cheesecake bombs that I’ve seen on all these food bloggers page. When I went in they looked a lot thinner than I had seen everywhere and were not what I expected. That being said it was still a really good cookie but I think they should spread the cheesecake out more and serve them warm or make them thicker. I would probably rank these as my number three cookie.

LEVAIN- $4.00

Okay my problem with Levain is they are just not consistent enough. I have had them right out of the oven and they were absolutely amazing and borderline best ever but this time they weren’t warm or as even as gooey as normal…which is kind of like their trademark now. They also don’t have regular chocolate chip. It has walnuts. This is fine if you love walnuts (I don’t and usually just pick them out). I think they need a bigger variety of cookies as well. I think they only have four. They have opened up several locations now but I wonder if thats why they are slacking a bit. Maybe too many new employees? I don’t know. I am trying to give them the benefit of the doubt because the employees are always so nice and they are really good cookies. They are typically thick and dense with a soft moist center. They have a pretty popular dark chocolate with peanut butter too. They also are pretty pricey cookies.

CITY CAKES- $4.50

IMG_7034 IMG_7035

Hahaha so I don’t know if I was really hungry or it was a combination of the two…but these cookies were amazing. I really should go back and take a picture of a complete one so sorry ha. They were so buttery and thick and soft and just plain good. I must mention that they also have a 1 pound red velvet cookie and they do ice-cream sandwiches here. These cookies are expensive but they are big enough to share. Lyle said these cookies remind him of my homemade cookies which was awfully nice of him. They just have that homey feel which is why I rank these as my second favorite chocolate chip. Holy yum.

INSOMNIA COOKIES- Deluxe $3.19

We love insomnia cookies for a lot of reasons and that’s why we ranked these babies as number one. First off, they are served WARM. The only cookie place that always consistently serves them warm. It’s a pretty unassuming place and looking at the flavors they don’t look special but then they bring them out and you’re like okay these are dang good. They are crispy around the edges and have a gooey center. They do ice-cream sandwiches, they deliver, sell several types of milk and their deluxe cookies are out of this world. The chocolate chip cookie had tons of big chunks of chocolate. Make sure you get the deluxe triple chocolate chunk. The deluxe cookies are better in my opinion because they are bigger and it makes the cookie softer and gooier. Another bonus is they are open really really late while most other places close a lot earlier. I have to give an honorable mention to the smore’s cookie and the peanut butter cup. We always get these two and split them because they are THE BEST EVER. Try them yourself if you don’t believe me. IMG_7006

Also honorable mention- Insomnia Cookies may have the best deluxe chocolate chip cookie but Ben’s Cookies has the best oatmeal cookie of all time.  *mic drop*

Okay Ben’s in general is really good. The oatmeal tastes like cinnamon heaven.

This is so funny! My teachers always bring chocolate chip cookies from Insomnia for the last day of class. I think they are “eh”. Best black and white cookie IMO is at Pick A Bagel! And my favorite overall cookie is the chocolate peanut butter from Levain haha. This is such a cute idea!
